Day Three: One of a Kind

Drama driven slice of life series aren’t something we see very often. The few I’ve found often exist in the fantasy and sci-fi realms. There’s Natsume’s Book of Friends and Kino’s Journey, but both offer comedic or convoluted flavors. And while those series are good, they’re missing an x-factor for me. There are some works that offer a distilled resonance, an uncanny viewing experience which can’t be put into words. Thought provoking? Maybe. Inspiring? Not quite. The characteristic I’m failing to describe is the equivalent of a six sense in the anime industry.

Mushishi has been the only series I’ve watched that truly offers the perfect balance of thrill and chill. I’m still flabbergasted how a series can embody relaxed tension, such an oxymoron shouldn’t feasibly be possible. And yet, that’s exactly how I would describe the show. Hushed and entrancing, the show had me captivated from start to finish in a way that I’ve never before experienced. I’ve never seen anything like this show, and it’s certainly not for everyone, but its atmosphere and insights intrigue me, like no other series has.

  1. I’m a big fan of Mushishi myself! Funny story… The three days that it took me to watch it I was real sick. I was running a really high fever, but would watch it in between slipping in and out of consciousness. Whilst it wasn’t nice being sick (obvs) being all feverish and delirious kind of added to the overall otherworldliness of the show!

    1. That’s a great story, and I can totally see how it would add to the feel of the show! I used to watch it before I fell asleep–perhaps a bad choice, as I’m a binge-watcher, but I digress. There was something about watching it late at night which made it feel like a hushed secret that I discovered while the rest of the world slept.
