No contest. This right here will give you major Samurai Champloo vibes. It’s absolutely glorious. It’s got grit, swank and bite. Expect some lo-fi hip-hop, some rock anthems, some rap, some synth-y goodness. You want jazzy bits? We got the brushes and keys ready, so grab a whisky. You want a fanfare? We got a full marching band. On top of that, most songs have several different versions, including: sorrow, acoustic, emotional, instrumental, playful, slow, night, piano, etc. Each version has a totally different feel than the previous. The longest tune is 2:28, and most are about a minute or so.
The OP gives me that 80’s classic rock, classic animation feel. Plus it’s catchy as hell.
That lone wolf lifeeee.
Personal favorites (there are a lot of them) include:
The Theme of Gansaku Nanbu: It’s so funky and it has a vibraslap in it. What more could you want?
A day in the life: BASS. Hello!
The Theme of Sachio: Hnnnnngggg. Arguably one of the most iconic tunes in anime in my opinion. The mallet instruments featured are delightful. The breakdown into piano/brushes/jazz gives me life. The wind chimes aren’t cheese, and I ain’t even mad about the snaps.
The Slum City – COMA-CHI: the spit verses are sick.
The Slum – Shingo Sekiguchi: little Spanish guitar feels. synthy bits.
The theme of Bangaichi: a banger of a tune. The layers in this are just… I’m drooling.
Get up – Michael Kaneko: I feel like I was transported to the 80’s and I love it.
The theme of Yukiko Shirato: did someone say STRINGS? (THE FANFARE VERSION HAS TRUMPETS AND MARCHING DRUMS. THIS IS NOT A DRILL)
The theme of Fujimaki – Shingo Sekiguchi: okay, what basement bar and band did I just stumble into? Seriously, this oozes jazzy goodness.
The theme of Aragaki: the build in this is pretty damn lovely.
The Theme of Mikio Shirato: YES THE STRINGS ARE BACK AND THEY INVITED THE SYNTH TO THE PARTY, TOO.
[“Conflict” is good but also gives me anxiety. the slow version, less so. Same with “Change the situation”, but the synth is nice.]
The theme of Yuri: the synth in this is delicious. The first time I heard it when I was watching the show, I got goosebumps. Real talk.
[“Confession” would be prefect if the snaps were subbed out for some claves. the vibraphone, piano and bass all sound wonderful]
Resolution: is that brass I hear? YES. YES THAT IS DEFINITELY BRASS. That sassy trumpet is what dreams are made of.
Gearless Joe – DJ Baku, COMA-CHI: I’m in a hip-hop video game.
We are Bangaichi – Michael Kaneko: the words are a’ight. But I’m really here for that guitar.
The Beast – COMA-CHI: really well balanced. My head’s bobbin’ to that beat.
Celebration: I’d probably turn the reverb down, but I’m always a fan of a well placed shuffle beat, some nice background vocals, and synths.
The ending – Yosuke Inoue: One part troll. One part electric guitar.
Watch on, Annieme-niac!
